Hello Will, I have been a student of yours for some time now and have enjoyed and learned a lot from your various courses and all the free education that you give us.

The Sketching the Landscape course was great and when I saw your sneak preview for this course I couldn’t wait for it to be released. I purchased it as soon as I saw your announcement this morning (Pacific Time in the U.S.) and had a bit of time to watch some of it.

It is exactly what I need right now, I have been struggling with narrow streets, prospective “on the fly”, flat lighting and how to simplify what I see. It looks like you have all the answers that I need in this new course and I am very excited to apply your methods to the sketches that have been giving me trouble.

Thank you for keep producing wonderful videos and giving us such great instruction. Katerina

Just completed lesson 1 and my first sketch better than I expected! Really like the gentle delivery and step by step instructions. Plus it’s an approach to drawing buildings that breaks through my ugh-where-on-earth-do-I-even-start panic. Off to buy more art supplies now…

This is a great course for me and I really enjoyed it! I really like using the pens instead of pencils. I’ve been recovering from leg surgery for over a month and hope to go on a short vacation to Florida soon and get lots of sketching done. I’ll let you know of my progress. Thanks.

    Will,
A year ago I took your Urban Sketching class. I had a little sketching experience and had tried to paint a few times, but my eye was too sophisticated for my skill set and I was always unhappy with what I produced, even when others liked it.

I took your class and not only enjoyed it thoroughly, but found myself able to stick with it and practice for the first time. I liked that you recommended specific pens and products and found that they worked for me as well. Your descriptions and instructions were soothing and encouraging but, more importantly they are detailed and they work- and you never talk down to the student and neither oversimplify things that are complicated nor complicate the simple things!

Your step-by-step sections helped me see the thought processes and the steps and also helped me to trust my instincts and develop my own style even as I tried to copy exactly what you demonstrated. I practiced in a notebook in the evenings and just enjoyed the process even when the drawings were TERRIBLE and the perspective totally off, I took your advice and just stayed in the moment and had fun with the play of ink and water and line and color. Within a couple weeks I had improved enough that I began to share sketches on social media and in a few months people were asking to BUY them, so I had to begin playing on better paper! It is a year later and I’m drawing and painting up a storm and about ready to take your portrait class.

People remark on my “talent” and “relaxed style” — that is all a result of your teaching and your sense of humor and the techniques and attitude your classes cultivate. Your blogs are funny and fascinating and again, never condescending — to speak as if it is one artist to another or one friend to another sharing insights and discoveries. In addition I admire your paintings and ink sketches which are inspiring in themselves. Anyway, thank you and in case you ever wonder if anyone out there is listening — they are.

This class not only taught me a lot, but stated me on a path towards drawing and painting as a main part of my life, influencing much more than I could have anticipated. I’m selling draws myself and paintings — something I literally never expected. You do a great job! These are the ONLY online classes I have ever taken that were totally worth the investment and I’m saving up to take your portrait class next.

Hi Stacy, wow, thanks so much for your kind and generous feedback and it’s fantastic to hear how the course has helped over the development of your sketches. It made me laugh when you said about upgrading to better quality paper. Congratulations on the sales and paintings that’s really great. Really hope you enjoy the portrait course. Thanks again for taking the time to comment Stacy, it really is much appreciated.

      Cheers,
      Will
